Czechs in Portugal The work aims to map the diverse factors which shaped the perspectives of Czech travelers on Portugal in the 20th and 21th century. It focuses on the analysis and synthesis of seven travel journals from this period: Za horama pyrenejskýma by Jiří Guth-Jarkovský (1902), Kde země končí a moře začíná by Roman Vlach (1962), Jak jsem se stal Portugalcem by Alexandr Petrželka (1980), Poloostrov na konci světa by Josef Hotmar (1989), Jak jsme pili portské by Jan Šmíd (2004), Výlet do Portugalska aneb Poetický průvodce na cestu tam a zpátky by Jan Burian (2005) and Vstávám a pokračuji v cestě by František Lízna (2010). The first chapter defines the travel journal as a literary genre, its characteristics, and the changes of its functions throughout history. The second chapter is concerned with the analysis of the individual travel journals. First, the profile of the author, his motivations for the journey, and the writing of the book are analyzed, and subsequently the language, form and contents of the piece of work. The artistic and content value of the works is evaluated based on the correctness and complexity of the information presented in each of them. Then, the degree to which the selected works can be considered subjective or objective is assessed, taken in account the ability of...
