Women in British India

Abstract

This paper deals with the topic of women in British India, especially in the second half of the 19th century, and the change of their situation during the British rule. With the British taking over the rule of the country in the second half of the 19th century, Indian society was more and more being exposed to European customs and different takes on women's position in society. The British introduced numerous laws which in effect improved the situation of women, such as the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act for example, and will be reviewed and assessed with regard to their historical context in this paper. Not only does this thesis give an insight into the women's situation during this period, it also illustrates what was done to change it from both British and Indian perspectives. Tato práce se zabývá tématem žen v Britské Indii, zejména ve druhé polovině devatenáctého století, a změnou jejich situace během britské nadvlády. Když Britové převzali vládu nad Indií ve druhé polovině devatenáctého století, indická společnost byla čím více vystavena evropským zvykům a jiným pohledům na postavení žen ve společnosti. Britové zavedli množství zákonů, které měly zlepšit situaci žen, jako například Hindu Widows Remarriage Act, které jsou v historickém kontextu zkoumány v této práci.
