Etnická identita Čechů v San Diegu

Abstract

Diplomová práce "Etnická identita Čechů v San Diegu" řeší otázku identity českých emigrantů a jejich potomků v americkém velkoměstě San Diego v Kalifornii. Cílem práce je analyzovat fenomén etnické identity na vybraném vzorku Čechoameričanů prostřednictvím metody kvalitativního výzkumu (strukturované rozhovory). V práci je kladen důraz na otázku uchování české identity v konfrontaci s kontextem jejich akulturačních a integračních procesů. Kromě zjištění stavu deklarované a žité výchozí etnické identity je práce zacílena na reflexi jevů, které mohou v průběhu pobytu v USA podpořit vůli udržet si výchozí etnickou identitu. Pozornost je věnována symbolické etnicitě jako formě adaptace na nové prostředí, kdy etnicita přebírá expresivní, více než instrumentální úlohu v lidských životech a stává se jen aktivitou volného času.

This thesis 'Ethnic identity of Czechs in San Diego' discusses a question of identity of Czech emigrants and their descendants in American city of San Diego, California. The goal of the thesis is to analyze phenomenon of ethnic identity on a chosen sample of Czechamerican informers by methodology of qualitative research (structured interviews). There is made an emphasis on preservation of Czech identity in confrontation with connection to their acculturation and integration processes. In addition to findings of conditions of declared and living initial ethnic identity, the thesis is aimed to reflexion of features that can support the will to sustain the original ethnic identity during living in the USA. Symbolic ethnicity, the form of adaptation, is brought into the focus. The ethnicity takes on an expressive rather than instrumental function in people's lives, becoming more of a leisure- time activity.
