Polycentric English: How Czech EFL Teachers View and Manage Variation

Abstract

Kolonizační úsilí Britského impéria a ekonomická prosperita Spojených států amerických jsou dva z největších důvodů rozšíření anglického jazyka a vývinu nových variet. Jsou to také největší důvody, proč jsou generalizovaná americká angličtina a britská angličtina dvě z nejrozšířenějších variet, sloužících jako standard pro výuku angličtiny v zemích vnějšího a rozšiřujícího se kruhu. Angličtina je tudíž polycentrický jazyk vyvíjející se na různých místech v různých směrech. Cílem této práce bylo zkoumat, jaké variety používají čeští učitelé angličtiny jako cizího jazyka při výuce, jak prezentují polycentrický charakter angličtiny jejich studentům a jak vnímají variety, které využívají jejich studenti. Mimo to, Teorie jazykového managementu je využita pro zkoumání, jak tito učitelé pracují s variací v učebně. Hypotéza práce předpovídá, že čeští učitelé angličtiny jako cizího jazyka si pro vyučování vyberou jednu z rozšířených generalizovaných variet, americkou nebo britskou angličtinu, a budou směřovat k tomu, aby jejich studenti adoptovali jednu z těchto variet. The colonizing endeavours of the British Empire and the economic prosperity of the US are two of the greatest reasons for the spread of the English language and the emergence of new varieties. They are also the main reasons why the generalized American English (AmE) and British English (BrE) are two of the most widely used varieties, serving as the standard for teaching English in the countries of the outer and expanding circles. English is therefore a polycentric language developing in different areas in diverse ways. The aim of this thesis is to examine the varieties Czech teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) use in the classroom, how they present the polycentric character of English to their students, and how they view the varieties their students choose to use. Furthermore, Language Management Theory is used to explore how these teachers work with variation in the classroom. The hypothesis of the thesis predicts that Czech EFL teachers will choose either of the widely used generalized AmE or BrE varieties while teaching, and they will aim to teach their students either of the two.
