The paper presents some multivariable techniques for the evaluation of the level of the Czechoslovak retail sale network in comparison with the retail sale abroad, The initial evaluation based on the observation of basic data shows a possible mutability of the Czechoslovak position from the point of view of individual indices. A more detailed specification of existing differences has been carried out by means of the multiple regression analysis. It has shown that the network of the food stores is statistical significantly determined by the structure of settlements, by the motorization level and the economic development of the state. The influence of the quantity of food consumption is of second-rate importance. Multivariable analyses have shown that the real state of the network of food stores in Czechoslovakia does not respond to the intensity of model data based on the calculation of determining factors. Consequently, it can be termed insufficient. The applied method shows a better possibility of analysing the real situation in comparison with the use of traditional description of deviations. In this way some other possibilities are offered for the practical application of geographical knowledge
