This master's thesis provides an overview of the historical development and contemporary changes of Rychnov nad Kněžnou City, with a special emphasis on the relations and attitudes in the local public life after the breakdown of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and of Communism in respect to civil society principles. It describes the key attributes of civil society and their significance for the renewal of civil society at the level of both a public and personal life. By a questionnaire survey it studies whether the contemporary citizens of Rychnov nad Kněžnou identify themselves with any form of public life, whether it is meanigful to be a member of a club or association, if the associational life follows the First Republic tradition.
