Práce mapuje dobový kontext Velenovského díla, pojednává proměny Velenovského představ o evoluci a nejzajímavější aspekty jeho teoretických úvah týkajících se biologie. Na začátku Darwinovu teorii plně uznává, v pozdním věku zastává zcela protikladnou teorii. Klíčová slova: dějiny botaniky, Josef Velenovský, evoluční teorie, přírodní výběr, altruismus
