The aim of this thesis is to provide a systematic review of the use of the definite, indefinite and zero articles in Italian and German. The theoretical part draws from the traditional grammars used in high schools and at universities. Furthermore, it provides a contrastive analysis from the viewpoint of Czech native speakers based on the contrastive grammar and offers possible translations of the articles to the Czech language. The practical part analyses the available teaching materials of German and Italian for foreigners and evaluates the extent to which the topic of articles is presented. This part is followed by a didactic experiment, carried out at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University, covering the most frequent mistakes made by Czech native speakers regarding the use of articles in either of these languages.
