Limes ve Skotsku, Antoninův val

Abstract

Tato práce se zabývá Antoninovým valem. V historickém úvodu je čtenáři představen podtext celé římské přítomnosti v Británii, následující kapitola jakožto topografická sekce celé práce zase slouží především jako podklad pro další, hlavní část celé práce - samotné pojednání o Antoninově valu. K samotnému Antoninovu valu nejsou v rámci této práce zveřejňovány žádné exkluzivní výsledky či závěry autorova výzkumu, jedná se spíše o práci shrnující dosavadní bádání na poli limitu ve Skotsku. Práce se snaží spíše zasazovat existenci valu do širších souvislostí římské přítomnosti v Británii a představovat systém fungování římského limitu v kontextu nejsevernější provincie Římské říše. V kapitolách Historický úvod a Topografie Antoninova Valu a významných lokalit na sever a jih od něj vychází tato práce především z publikace The Legacy of Rome: Scotland's Roman Remains od Lawrence Keppie a také z již klasického díla Anne Robertson, The Antonine Wall: a handbook to the Roman wall between Forth and Clyde and a guide to its surviving remains. Pro potřeby historického úvodu také plně postačila obecná publikace H. H.Scullard: Roman Britain: Outpost of The Roman Empire. Pro samotný Antoninův val pak nejlépe posloužily spíše obecné publikace D. J. Breeze, ať už The Antonine Wall, Roman forts in Britain nebo Roman frontiers...

This work attends to the Roman limes in Scotland, especially the Antonine Wall. Apart from the Wall itself, there is analysis of the whole Roman presence in Scotland, begining with the forts and smaller military enclosures jointed to the Wall, continuing with the whole network of roads and fortifications north and south of the Wall. In particular chapters is discussed the whole historical overtone of Roman presence in Scotland, the topography of each significant site, by which author means those ones, which are connected with the Antonine occupation of Scotland and the Roman limes in the region of nowadays Scotland. Apart from military sites, this work is concerned on one hand with the impact of Roman short-time presence on native population. On the other hand it includes study of history of the researches in the area of modern Scotland, or the relevance of studying the partial sources in the framework of the whole research of limes in Sctoland. This work is also concerned with the builders of the Wall itself, same like the soldiers on the guarding duty on the Wall and their life in the harsch climate of the very north edge of the Roman Empire.
