English translation equivalents of "určitě" and "jistě": a contrastive study

Abstract

Tato diplomová práce vychází z pozorování Viléma Mathesia, že v anglickém jazyce je menší výskyt adverbiálních určení než v jazyce českém. Ve svém díle Obsahový rozbor současné angličtiny na základě obecně lingvistickém Mathesius předpokládá, že některé překladové koreláty českých adverbií musí mít jinou realizační formu (Mathesius, 1961: 169). Pro získání materiálu na tuto diplomovou práci byl použit paralelní korpus užívající softwaru ParaConc. Ze sedmi románů, jmenovitě Nesnesitelná lehkost bytí a Nesmrtelnost od Milana Kundery, Saturnin od Zdeňka Jirotky, Výchova dívek v Čechách od Michala Viewegha, Život s hvězdou od Jiřího Weila, Romeo Julie a tma od Jana Otčenáška a Pan Theodor Mundstock od Ladislava Fukse, bylo excerpováno prvních 60 příkladů obsahujících adverbium jistě a 48 příkladů obsahujících adverbium určitě a jejich autentické překladové koreláty do angličtiny. Adverbium určitě bylo obsaženo ve výše jmenovaných dílech právě 48krát, a proto byly použity všechny příklady. Naproti tomu adverbium jistě se vyskytlo ve stejném materiálu 112krát. Tyto příklady byly označeny U pokud šlo o adverbium určitě a J, pokud o adverbium jistě a všem příkladům bylo dále uděleno takové číslo, v jakém pořadí se objevily po provedení excerpce (např. English adverbs as translation counterparts of the Czech adverbs určitě and jistě are of lower freguency. Jistě is translated as an adverb in 77.5% of all cases and určitě in 51% of all cases. It must be noted, with respect to this figure, that the percentage is gained only from the translated English counterparts, which decreases the number of the analyzed examples from 60 to 57 in the case of jistě and from 48 to 41 in the case of určitě. Consequently, 5% of all examples of jistě and 15% of určitě are not translated at all. However, there is a phenomenon to compensate for this left-out translation in the case of určitě by means completely different from what was the focus of this analysis. This compensation could be observed in 43% of not translated examples of určitě. The second most frequent means of translating určitě and jistě is the category Verb involved. This category, however, is strongly conditioned by the grammatical function of the English translation counterpart. Only the grammatical function of disjunct can be realized by the category Verb involved. This can be observed in 12% of all translated examples of jistě and in 37% of určitě.
