Charles University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ph.D. Consultant: PharmDr. Ajit Kumar Pratihast Author: Zhuldyz Abisheva Title of the thesis: Effect of 100nm polystyrene nanoplastics on the permeability of human skin Nanoplastics are particles formed by the environmental degradation and fragmentation of larger plastic materials in the environment. They are typically defined as plastic particles ranging in size from 1 to 1000 nm. Among various plastic types, polystyrene is the most frequently studied and commonly used model nanoplastics in scientific research due to its widespread environmental occurrence, physiochemical stability, and availability for experimental studies. In this study, the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics were investigated on human skin barrier properties. Polystyrene nanoplastics of size 100 nm were applied on the ex-vivo human skin and the transepidermal water loss and electrical impedance were measured. Subsequently, permeation and retention of two model permeants indomethacin and theophylline were studied using high performance liquid chromatography. The results showed that polystyrene nanoplastics of size 100 nm have no effect on water loss, electrical impedance and...en_US
