dc.description.abstract8 Abstract This thesis explores how therapists in therapeutic communities for clients with addiction- related problems experience, understand and navigate occupational stress in their everyday professional lives. It draws on a social constructivist framework and engages with the concepts of emotional labour and total institution. Data were collected through six in-depth interviews with workers from three therapeutic communities and analysed using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged from the analysis. The emotional demands of client work do not end with a shift, they spill into workers' personal lives regardless of how long they have been in the field. The community environment is itself a structural source of stress: chronic unpredictability, the invisible work of holding a team together, and the constant physical presence of clients create conditions in which stress builds up in ways that are hard to notice until it is already significant. Workers manage stress largely on their own initiative, in their own time, and at their own expense. Support from colleagues and management exists, but it is inconsistent and not something workers can rely on. The most significant obstacle to addressing occupational stress is professional identity itself. The caregiver identity that makes workers good therapists is the...en_US
