This bachelor's thesis focuses on the dermal skeleton of non-tetrapod vertebrates, a morphologically highly diversified system with a long and complex evolutionary history. The external (dermal) skeleton refers to skeletal elements that are primarily located near the surface of the skin or within it, and which consist of mineralized tissues such as dentin, bone, and hypermineralized enamel or enameloid. The dermal skeleton forms at the interface between the mesenchyme (future dermis) and the ectoderm (epidermis) due to interactions between these two layers. From an evolutionary perspective, it is one of the oldest mineralized tissues to have evolved in vertebrates. The basic structural unit of this ancient system is the odontode-a projection of dentin covered with enamel or enameloid, anchored to a bony base. This unit has been modified many times over the course of its evolutionary history, giving rise to a wide range of derived structures and tissues, both in modern living vertebrates and in their extinct fossil relatives. The aim of this study is to integrate knowledge about the diversity of these structures with the theory of the odontode as a unifying element, and to demonstrate whether the odontode is present as a structural unit within these derived types of elements. Furthermore, the thesis...en_US
