uk.abstract.enThis article examines Brod’s departure from Prague in 1938–1939 through a comparative reading of his autobiography Streitbares Leben (1960) and his diaries and notes from 1938 1940. Focusing on Brod’s use of the term immigration, it questions established distinctions between immigration, emigration, and exile, and reveals tensions between retrospective self-narration and contemporaneous documents. The analysis highlights discrepancies between fact and literary construction, explores narrative strategies of autobiographical writing, and demonstrates the value of the scholarly editing of personal writings for understanding exile literature. The study argues that Brod’s diaries offer unique insights into the production processes of exile narratives and broaden the conceptual scope of exile studies.cs
