| uk.abstract.en | For Max Brod, Hermann Grab was “undoubtedly […] destined to become the leader of the next Prague literary generation.” In 1935, the then 31-year-old author published The Town Park, in which he in lyrical prose captured his hometown city of Prague and his memories of an upper middle-class childhood during the First World War. Klaus Mann was “delighted”, for Heinz Politzer the influence of Proust, Kafka and Thomas Mann was clear; but it was just as clear how Grab progressed in this direction “in order to find his own realm.” Grab began to conquer literary Prague when the city had already become an exile for others. Those expelled from Germany as of 1933 were able to continue working in the local cultural scene, but when the swastika invaded Prague in 1939, they had to flee again. The same goes for Grab, who reached New York in December 1940, founded a music school near the Central Park and wrote about his experiences. | cs |
