Abstract

- Using corneal stromal lenticules obtained during ReLEx SMILE refractive surgery for the treatment of corneal ulcers Background: Corneal stromal lenticule (CSL) is a part of the corneal stroma that is generated as a waste product during the refractive surgery ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) and is no longer used. With the increasing number of ReLEx SMILE procedures and the number of potentially usable CSLs, two main aspects of their use are currently being investigated. The first aspect includes the biological properties of CSLs and their proper preservation with respect to long-term storage. The second aspect is related to the potential clinical use of CSLs. As a high-quality biomaterial, CSL has significant potential for alternative use in the treatment of some eye diseases. Especially the treatment of corneal ulcers is currently difficult due to the relative unavailability of donor corneas preserved by the hypothermia technique or in tissue media. The possibility of using deep-frozen CSLs could significantly help in these cases. Concurrently it can be assumed that these CSLs can be preserved for a long time by cryopreservation, which would make these tissues immediately available.
