Since the dawn of space exploration, the question of whether life exists beyond Earth has fueled considerable debate. To help us with determining what could be a sign of life, early astronomers have developed the term biosignature. This term refers to measurements or data that could only be of biological origin, most common detections are gases. These gaseous biosignatures play an important role in astrobiology, due to us being able to detect them with ground or space based telescopes and occasionally a probe. Common gases of interest are methane (CH4), phosphine (PH3), nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2). There have been some detections within the Solar System, most notably on Mars (CH4) and in the atmosphere of Venus (PH3). However we must be careful when interpreting this data, due to the possibility of having a false positive detection. These false positives, in the context of biosignatures, mean that the gas could be in the atmosphere, but not because of biological processes. It is possible that these gases can be produced abiotically, through some pathways that might not yet be known to us. Many of these gases have possible pathways, that do not require any sort of biological process the most discussed gases being CH4 and PH3. Using early Earth as a reference to what could have been detected...en_US
