This thesis deals with and analyses the role of the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the decolonisation of British territories in Africa. The aim of the thesis is to assess whether and to what extent the monarch influenced the decolonisation process. The thesis is set within a broad theoretical framework and draws on insights into colonisation and decolonisation from Aimé Césaire, Antonio Gramsci, Immanuel Wallerstein and Marc Fero. The thesis uses a qualitative case study method and studies three territories, Tanganyika, Uganda and Kenya. At the same time, a verificatory quantitative method was also carried out as a part of the analysis, which assesses the influence of the number of diplomatic missions on the speed of the decolonisation process. The study monitors the public speeches of the monarch, diplomatic missions and the reactions of local political elites and links them to the actual development of decolonisation leading to the independence of the controlled territories. The results show that the role of the monarch and the influence of the monarchy itself on decolonisation was limited. The monarch played a significant role in the symbolic, diplomatic and ceremonial framework of the transition to independence, and his influence was exercised primarily...en_US
