This bachelor thesis concerns itself with the First International Polar Year (1882-1883) in the context of contemporary scientific and public communication. The First International Polar Year was the first attempt at internationally coordinated meteorological and geophysical research in the polar regions. This thesis seeks to situate this project within contemporary scientific and social discourses and is theoretically inspired by Bruno Latour and Thomas Kuhn in particular. The research first examines the narratives created by the Austrian ship's lieutenant Karl Weyprecht to promote his plans among fellow scientists and the public; second, it traces the main themes in the communications of the International Polar Commission that organized the project; and third, it follows the themes and narratives conveyed by Czech- and German- language Austro-Hungarian newspapers of the time. The findings show that the narrative shaped by Weyprecht of a radical change of approach to the polar regions did not fully permeate other contemporary perceptions of the project; that for scientists of the International Polar Commission, the nationalism-inspired international rivalries of the time became paradoxically both a hindrance and a help in organizing; and that the periodical press often put national glory at the...en_US
