Sharks, a key predators, play an important role in maintaining the balance of food webs and regulating the populations of other marine organisms. Despite this, their populations have declined drastically in recent decades. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 37 % of oceanic shark species are threatened with extinction. Some species have seen their populations decline by up to 70 % in the last 50 years. This decline is mainly due to anthropogenic factors in the form of overfishing and 'shark finning' (demand for shark fins), in which sharks' fins are cut off and then the body thrown back into the water. Shark fins are a valuable raw material, especially in Asian countries where they are used to make shark fin soup. Other threats include entanglement in fishing nets when catching other species such as tuna, and entanglement in protective nets at beaches to protect holidaymakers from sharks and prevent them from approaching the shore. However, this approach is causing an unnecessarydecline in sharks, includingnon-aggressive species that are not a threat to humans. At the same time, habitats such as mangroves and coral reefs, which are key areas for breeding, nurserygrowth and protectionfrom other predators, are being lost.Other factors, such as ocean pollution and...en_US
