To Love or to Die?: Gay Love in selected poetry of Richard Siken, Ocean Vuong and Jericho Brown

Abstract

Tato práce zkoumá cizí síly vedoucí homosexuální lásku ke smrti v poezii Richarda Sikena, Oceana Vuonga a Jericha Browna. Pud smrti, který byl původně definován filosofem Sigmundem Freudem a přeformulován teoretikem Lee Edelmanem, přispívá ke snaze heteronormativity proměnit autentické síly lásky v homosexuálních vztazích v destruktivní. Práce si klade za cíl dokázat, že téma homosexuální lásky ve vybrané poezii má hrnice nastavené pudem smrti, avšak tato omezení fungují jako kritika utlačování, které pramení ze společenských norem. Pud života může být obnoven a gay láska se tak může stát autentickou i přes konfrontaci s traumatickou historií. Nejdříve se práce zabývá všesměrným pudem smrti ve sbírce Crush od Richarda Sikena, která sotva nechává homosexuální lásce proctor k oddechnutí si od smrti a zkázy. Vnitřní pud smrti negativně působí na lyrický subjekt a podněcuje ho k myšlení, že si za svou homosexualitu zaslouží smrt. Vnitřní pud smrti se pak obrací ven a subjekt agresivně reaguje na jakýkoli homosexuální vztah, s nímž se setká. Externí pud smrti, který je tvořen heteronormativní společností, je identifikován jako hlavní původ destruktivních sklonů. This thesis is an investigation of the extraneous forces that drive gay love in the poetry of Richard Siken, Ocean Vuong, and Jericho Brown toward death. The death drive, as originally formulated by philosopher Sigmund Freud and repurposed by queer theorist Lee Edelman, is a major contributor to the heteronormative pursuit of rendering the constructive forces of love within the context of gay relationships destructive. The aim of this thesis is to prove that the theme gay love in the selected poetry may be restricted by the death drive but that these restrictions work to criticize the oppressive social order. The life drive can be reclaimed eventually and gay love can become constructive even with the confrontation of traumatic history. The thesis begins with the omnidirectional death drives of Richard Siken's Crush that barely offers gay love respite from death and ruin. The inward death drive affects the speaker in Crush negatively and plants thoughts of deserving death for being gay. The inward death drive then gets turned outward with as an aggressive reaction to any gay relationship that the speaker encounters.
