Effect of speech rhythm manipulations on speakers' credibility

Abstract

This thesis aims to determine whether irregular rhythm of speech in English native speakers has an effect on how trustworthy they sound to listeners. Next, it aimed to determine whether university students of the English language evaluate the trustworthiness of speakers with irregular rhythm differently than non-English students. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part describes general observations about rhythm of speech, ways of evaluating one's personality, and certain speech characteristics which contribute to sounding less trustworthy. The practical part describes the methodology that was used to answer the research questions. For this purpose, an experiment where the natural rhythm of English speakers underwent artificial manipulation was conducted. These manipulated recordings were then combined with unchanged recordings from the same speakers. The level of trustworthiness of all the speakers in both manipulated and unchanged recordings was then evaluated in an online perception test by English students and non-English students. Cílem této práce je odpovědět na otázku, zdali rodilí mluvčí angličtiny s nepravidelným rytmem řeči působí méně důvěryhodně. Dále se taky snaží nalézt odpověď na otázku, zdali vysokoškolští studenti angličtiny hodnotí rodilé mluvčí angličtiny s nepravidelným rytmem jinak než studenti jiných oborů. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. V praktické části jsou popsány poznatky o rytmu řeči, o hodnocení lidské osobnosti a také o určitých aspektech řeči, které působí negativně na důvěryhodnost mluvčího. Praktická část popisuje metodu, která byla použita k zodpovězení dvou výše zmíněných otázek. Touto metodou byl experiment, ve kterém byl pomocí počítače manipulován přirozený rytmus rodilých mluvčí angličtiny. Tyto manipulované nahrávky byly posléze spolu s nezměněnými nahrávkami od stejných mluvčích vloženy do online percepčního testu, ve kterém byla hodnocena důvěryhodnost. Výsledky percepčního testu prokázaly, že mluvčí, jejichž rytmus byl manipulován působí méně důvěryhodně než ti mluvčí, jejichž rytmus zůstal nezměněný. Také se zdá, že studenti anglického jazyka oproti ostatním studentům mají větší tendenci vycítit nepravidelný rytmus. Je ale nutné podotknout, že abychom toto mohli říct s jistotou, musel by se provést ještě jeden, vylepšený experiment.
