dc.description.abstract | Polylepis forests in the Andes, of fragmental distribution, house a great diversity of flora species and an extraordinary and unique fauna in mountain ecosystems in altitudes above 3500 m. Studies on these forests proved the existence of more than twenty Polylepis species in the Andes, more precisely in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the north of Argentina and Chile. In the province of Ancash in Peru in the Cordillera Bianca there is a biosphere reservation, the National Park Huascarán, famous mainly for its tropical glaciers, the highest in the world. The Park is one of the few refuges of a sound population of these forests and of a rich variety of flora species and endemic fauna (Fjeldsá arnp; Kessler. 1996). Nevertheless, also in protected area there is a strong human impact of the local communities living in the high Andes on Polylepis forests. The micro basin of the Quillcay River, which is the object of this study, is a small area within in the National Park Huascarán with Polylepis foresta and retreating glaciers. As these forests are within a protected area, with minimal human impact, we must ask whether there is any relationship between the retreat of glaciers and the movement of the limit of Polylepis forests in the Quillcay basin. Will a movement of these forests bring some risk of soil erosion and boss of biodiversity? Is this risk imminent or not? This study tries to answer these questions by establishing a system Of geographical information allowing to prepare maps showing the distribution of Polylepis forests and of glaciers In this area, and that In two different time periods in the 1960s and in 2006 | es |
