Tlumočení při kolonizaci Severní Ameriky se zaměřením na oblast dnešních Spojených států amerických a Kanady

Abstract

Cílem této diplomové práce je nastínit podobu tlumočnické profese a její vývoj během kolonizace Severní Ameriky se zaměřením na oblast dnešních Spojených států amerických a Kanady. Tato práce se zakládá na deskriptivní metodě a historiografickém bádání a navazuje na předchozí translatologicko-historické výzkumy. Práce se snaží odpovědět na otázky, jakého původu byli tlumočníci, při jakých příležitostech se tlumočilo, jaké byly pracovní jazyky, jakou roli a postavení ve společnosti tlumočníci měli, jak byla vnímána kvalita tlumočení a jak se profese tlumočníka lišila v anglofonních a frankofonních oblastech Severní Ameriky. Dále si práce klade za cíl představit nejvýznamnější osobnosti dějin tlumočení a jejich roli během kolonizace Severní Ameriky. Výsledkem práce je představení nejdůležitějších aspektů tlumočnické profese od prvních kontaktů mezi Evropany a původními obyvateli Severní Ameriky až po konec 19. století.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to outline the main characteristics of interpreting as a profession and its development during the colonization of North America with a focus on the territory of the present-day United States of America and Canada. The research uses descriptive method and it is based on previous research in the field of history of interpreting. Additionally, this thesis focuses on these topics: interpreters' background, interpreter-mediated settings, interpreters' working languages, interpreters' role and social position, the perception of quality in interpreting and the difference between the profession in the English and French-speaking colonies. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the most important figures of the history of interpreting and their role during the colonization of North America. The thesis presents the most important aspects of the interpreting profession from the first encounters between Europeans and Native Americans to the end of the 19th century.
