Záporné postavy a jejich motivace ve filmech Marvel Cinematic Universe

Abstract

This thesis deals with the villains' depiction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. By examining the first 20 movies of the series, I try to find out how are the villains depicted in the MCU movies and what are their motivations. This is achieved through combination of studying relevant literature that deals with the topic, qualitative content analysis of the movies and narrative analysis, which is based on the monomyth structure of Joseph Campbell and its reinterpretation for movies and television by Christopher Vogler. In this thesis I first shortly describe the history of superhero movie as a whole and the specifics of the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the theoretical part I describe Campbell's and Vogler's narrative structure. Then I describe the methodology, which I then use to describe the findings and their interpretations. In this part I examine the villains' motivations, which are divided into several categories, and examine their story arcs through the prism of the Hero's journey structure. Here it is shown that the villains in the MCU movies are depicted in an overwhelmingly Manichean way. Diplomová práce pojednává o zobrazení záporných postav ve filmech Marvel Cinematic Universe. Zkoumáním prvních 20 filmů této série se snaží přijít na to, jak jsou záporné postavy ve filmech MCU zobrazovány a jaké jsou jejich motivace. To je provedeno skrze kombinaci studia relevantní literatury, kvalitativní obsahové analýzy daných filmů a narativní analýzou, založenou na struktuře monomýtu Josepha Campbella, respektive její interpretace pro filmovou a televizní tvorbu popsanou Christopherem Voglerem. V práci je tak nejdříve krátce popsána historie superhrdinského filmu jako celku a jsou vymezena specifika sdíleného univerza Marvel Cinematic Universe. V teoretické části jsou popsány Campbellova a Voglerova narativní struktura. Následně jsou popsána metodologická východiska. Ta jsou použita při popsání získaných poznatků a jejich interpretací. Zde jsou zkoumány motivace záporných postav, které jsou rozděleny do několika kategorií, aby následně jejich dějové oblouky byly zasazeny ho schématu Hrdinovy cesty. Je zde ukázáno, že záporné postavy ve filmech MCU jsou vyobrazovány primárně manichejským způsobem. V diskuzi jsou popsány možné problémy výzkumu a navrženy další směry potenciálního zkoumání, aby pak v závěru byly získané poznatky jak z teoretické, tak z analytické části shrnuty.
