Abstract

Příspěvek ke studiu koloniálních aktivit Cecila Rhodese v letech 1880-1896 Abstract: The topic of this bachelor thesis is the contribution of Cecile Rhodes within colonial politics in South Africa. Timewise the thesis focuses on the years 1880-1896. It is a period of time when Rhodes held political power so he could achieve his colonial goals. The first part of the thesis covers the situation in South Africa before Cecile Rhodes' arrival, then the circumstances of his arrival to South Africa and his entering into the Cape Parliament. The main focus is on an analysis of the various imperial activities that Rhodes has undertaken in Africa. Primarily the focus is on the conquest of Bechuanaland and Rhodesia regions, which thanks to him have become one of the territories under the British rule. The thesis also contains an analysis of the unrealized goal of creating a band of British territories in Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to Cairo. The ideas that lead Rhodes to his actions, including the idea of the Anglo-Saxon racial superiority are also included in this thesis. At the end there is a summary of events leading to Rhodes' resignation as a Prime Minister of the Cape of Colony and the results of his activities in South Africa.

Příspěvek ke studiu koloniálních aktivit Cecila Rhodese v letech 1880-1896 Abstrakt: Tématem bakalářské práce je přínos Cecila Rhodese v rámci koloniální politiky v Jižní Africe. Časově se práce soustředí na rozmezí let 1880-1896. Jedná se o období, kdy měl Rhodes v rukou politickou moc a mohl tak uskutečňovat své koloniální cíle. V úvodní části práce je nejprve rozebrána situace v Jižní Africe před působením Cecila Rhodese a poté okolnosti jeho příjezdu do Jižní Afriky a jeho vstup do kapského parlamentu. Stěžejní částí je rozbor jednotlivých imperiálních aktivit, které Rhodes na území Afriky podnikal. Především se jedná o výboje do oblastí Bečuánska a Rhodesie, které se díky němu staly dalšími územími pod Britskou nadvládou. Součástí práce je i rozbor nezrealizovaného cíle vytvořit pás britských držav v Africe od mysu Dobré naděje po Káhiru. Popsány jsou i myšlenky, které ho k tomu vedly, mezi které patří především idea anglosaské rasové nadřazenosti. V závěru jsou shrnuty události vedoucí k Rhodesově rezignaci na post ministerského předsedy Kapské kolonie a výsledky jeho činnosti v Jižní Africe.
