<title>Essays on Instrumental Variables</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11956/211780</link>
<description>Essays on Instrumental Variables
In this thesis, I study instrumental variable models and propose new methods for their analysis. I derive novel theoretical results, based on which I propose new statistical pro- cedures that are relevant for applied research. In addition to analytical derivations, I run simulations and apply the proposed methods to relevant empirical contexts. In Chapter 1, I consider a nonparametric instrumental variable model with binary treatment and propose a simple test of unobserved heterogeneity of treatment effects. The test is built on a novel statistical result that allows for the identification of the average second regression derivative by quadratic least-squares projections. Based on this statistical result, I propose a test of heterogeneity of average treatment effects across margins of participation, using the marginal treatment effects (MTE) methodology. In particular, I exploit the link between the slope of the MTE curve and the second derivative of an unknown regression function. The test is easy to implement and can be run using off-the-shelf software. Further, I illustrate the performance of my test with simulations based on an influential empirical setup. Finally, I propose a version of my test that checks for a monotone MTE curve and, more generally, monotone regression derivatives. V první kapitole uvažuji neparametrický model s instrumentální proměnnou a binární intervencí a navrhuji jednoduchý test nepozorované heterogenity efektů intervence. Test je založen na novém stati- stickém výsledku, který umožňuje identifikaci průměrné druhé derivace regresní funkce pomocí kvadratických projekcí metodou nejmenších čtverců. Na základě tohoto výsledku navrhuji test heterogenity průměrných efektů intervence napříč marginami participace využívající metodologii marginálních efektů intervence (marginal treatment effects, MTE). Konkrétně využívám vazbu mezi sklonem křivky MTE a druhou derivací neznámé regresní funkce. Test je snadno implementovatelný a lze jej provádět v běžně dostupném softwaru. Dále dokumentuji chování navrženého testu pomocí simulací založených na vlivném empirickém nastavení. Nakonec navrhuji verzi testu, která ověřuje monotonní tvar křivky MTE a obecněji monotonii regresních derivací. Obě verze testu mají implikace pro...

<title>Politická věda, Sartoriho metodologie a výzkum populismu</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11956/211760</link>
<description>Politická věda, Sartoriho metodologie a výzkum populismu
This dissertation deals with the methodological foundations of populism research, with an emphasis on Giovanni Sartori's conceptual approach and its applicability in contemporary political science. The aim is to overcome the terminological fragmentation and conceptual ambiguities that have long burdened the study of populism by systematically operationalising the concept. The text first maps the main theoretical approaches to populism and identifies their methodological limitations. It then presents Sartori's methodology, in particular the concepts of "stretching concepts" and the "ladder of abstraction," as tools for ensuring conceptual precision. The work also situates Sartori's approach within the Italian political science tradition and reflects on the debate over the applicability of political science. The empirical part applies the Sartorian framework to the concept of populism and proposes a structured typology. Based on clearly defined attributes such as the degree of inclusiveness, authoritarianism, nativism, or type of legitimizing narrative, an analytical model is created that allows for the differentiation of populist actors. The methodological contribution lies in linking typological construction with empirical classification without sacrificing conceptual coherence. The work thus...; Disertační práce se zabývá metodologickými základy výzkumu populismu s důrazem na konceptualizační přístup Giovanniho Sartoriho a jeho aplikovatelnost v současné politologii.

<title>Opportunities Distribution in Platform Work: Interplay of Structures, Practices, and Social Positions</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11956/207975</link>
<description>Opportunities Distribution in Platform Work: Interplay of Structures, Practices, and Social Positions
Digital labour platforms reorganise how workers access jobs, coordinate tasks, and are evaluated, but workers do not benefit from these arrangements equally. This dissertation examines how platform workers secure jobs and earnings in everyday practice and how unequal outcomes emerge through their engagement with platform arrangements. It adopts a practice- based sociomaterial perspective and uses Leonardi's affordances and constraints framework to show how the same platform features can enable some workers while constraining others. To connect these uneven effects to broader social hierarchies, the analysis draws on cultural capital, knowledgeability, and denial of failure. I study care work, transport, and food delivery in Czechia, combining interviews with platform workers and a platform co-founder, digital walkthroughs of platform interfaces, and analysis of a worker-run online group. Across three articles, I show that earning on platforms depends on more than task completion: workers must perform navigation work to convert platform participation into jobs and earnings. In care, workers engage in cultural labour to craft platform-legible profiles and secure desirable matches. In transport and delivery, workers build networked knowledgeability through informal peer infrastructures that help...; Digitální pracovní platformy proměňují způsoby, jakými pracovníci získávají zakázky, koordinují práci a jsou hodnoceni, avšak z těchto uspořádání neprofitují všichni stejně.
