The aim of this paper is to show the place of aphasia in linguistic research and the contribution of linguistic theory to the study of aphasia. It begins by introducing certain aspects of neuroscience and its methods, which inform the medical typology and symptomatology of aphasia. The role of linguistics in multidisciplinary aphasiology is discussed both from the historical and the contemporary point of view. The second part outlines the linguistic approach to testing and treating aphasia and, with reference to two international comparative research projects, it describes the universal and languagespecific characteristics of aphasia. Finally, it presents the seminal result of a long-term study of agrammatism in Czech, namely the interplay between the typological character of the language and the manifestation of aphasia symptoms.

Lexical collocation is a key concept in modern phraseology, but also one of the most controversial. There are two fundamental approaches to the concept: the frequency “bottom-up” approach closely associated with corpus linguistics and its statistical methods, and the phraseological “top-down” approach linked to traditional phraseology and its practical applications in pedagogical lexicography and language teaching. Both approaches are briefly outlined and compared.

The article focuses on the synthetic future (FS: “hablaré”) and the analytic future (FA: “voy a hablar”). It presents three perspectives on the use and the distribution of these two forms based on existing studies. The first perspective is represented by studies which focus on linguistic factors and explain the rise in frequency of the analytic future as a result of the grammaticalization of ir a + infinitive. The second perspective assumes that the FS and the FA are used in different semantic-pragmatic contexts and the third perspective points to different situational meanings of the FA and the FS.

The paper traces the influence of the Norwegian spelling reform launched in 1907 on the Norwegian written language in the US. The Norwegian immigrant community in America published a number of newspapers in their native language and the immigrant press became a significant part of the immigrants’ life in their new homeland. The changes and the development of their press reflect the gradual integration of Norwegians into American society in various areas. The research focuses on the linguistic level. For the purposes of the present paper, the newspaper Decorah-Posten (issues from the period 1935 — 1945) was chosen as the primary source material. Orthographic and grammatical usage in the Norwegian-American press is contrasted with the spelling codified in the 1907 spelling reform.
